Repealing the increase in the gasoline tax will have consequences. I worked for Caltrans as a right of way agent in the 1970's. I appraised and acquired property for various road projects. One of the projects was the widening of PCH in El Segundo between Rosecrans and Imperial Highway.

In the late 70's Caltrans lost funding because of the oil embargo. People used less gas because you could only purchase gas on certain days. If your license plate ended in an odd number, then you could only purchase gas on odd days. Within 18 months we lost one third of our right of way agents. 300 civil engineers were laid off. Projects were either eliminated or delayed.

We can expect the same thing again if the gas tax is reduced.

A couple of years ago, I hit a pothole on the San Diego Freeway. Fortunately I did not get a blow out or a bent rim but I did damage my suspension. The repair cost was more expense than years of gas tax increases.

To make mattes worse, the Federal Administration has proposed revising the formula for Interstate and federal roads. The proposal is to reduce the federal amount and increase the states' percentage. States will have to increase their gas tax or build more toll roads.

I urge you to vote against the repeal of the gas tax.
