Hermosa beach's historical preservation program has been neglected for quite some time.

This is evidenced by very few applications since it was initiated in the 90s.

As a former preservation commissioner, I know all too well that the process of landmark designation is cumbersome and expensive. We need to do what we can to give people an incentive to designate their properties. Property owners can benefit up to a 50% reduction in their property taxes.

The program needs a complete overhaul which would include some type of fee reduction or fee waiver. It makes sense to reduce our waive fees on a long-term property owner that may not financially benefit as much. However, causing the taxpayers to spend upwards of $10,000 for each application and requiring that applications be processed by the city will cause serious budgetary problems.
